Question Pools

NCVEC

Prior to 1984, all Amateur radio licensing examinations were administered directly or indirectly by the FCC. The pool of questions mandated by the FCC was originally managed by 3 VECs, namely the ARRL-VEC, the W5YI-VEC, and the Western Carolina VEC. Eventually the National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (NCVEC) was formed to coordinate the actions of the various independent VECs, and to formalize the management of the question pools.

Today NCVECs mission is to
  • recruit, train and accredit a corps of VE's (Volunteer Examiners) and issue appropriate accreditation documents
  • coordinate examination sessions as needed with accredited VE's.
  • provide a source of license testing materials (exams) for all VE's accredited by their own group
  • screen, approve, and forward successful applications to the FCC for further processing and issuance of licenses
  • evaluate test questions for clarity, accuracy, and completeness, and forward the results of their evaluations and their recommendations for any changes to the VEC question pool committee.

Volunteer Examiners (VEs) are licensed Amateur Radio individuals committed in giving their time to administer the examination sessions.

There are three question pools available, one per license class. Question pools are refreshed every 4 years. They are publicly available to all candidates on the NCVEC website (ncvec.org).
