2 Meter Critical Mass Amateur Radio Practice

What: An opportunity to practice Ham radio communications

When: Saturday, October 22, 2011. 1000 to 1200 hrs

Where: Spreckels Lake, Golden Gate Park

Check-in will be by radio at the Lake on 146.550 PL 100 simplex

Who: Licensed Amateur Radio Operators, any experience level, bring your radio and manual, paper and pencil

Why: There are not many opportunities to practice with your radio; so come to the Lake to practice, learn from an Elmer or be an Elmer

How: Use your radio, practice with other Hams; learn more about your radio and Amateur Radio Communications

What's more fun than being with other Amateur Radio enthusiasts of varying experience levels talking on the radio?

So, come on out. Be an Elmer. Ask an Elmer for help. That's what Amateur Radio is all about.

The Club's participation in the San Francisco Marathon was a huge success. There were a few rough edges in the beginning in communication link reliability but there are always challenges with the terrain of San Francisco with VHF & UHF. Even though those club members who participated in this event were radio amateurs, they all performed like pros. Nick Powell, NF1P, and Scott Esters AF6RT, were the Net Controls and kept the communication event running like a fine tuned watch.

A message from Nick to all volunteer radio ops:

Thank you to each of you for your assistance providing communications support for the medical team during The San Francisco Marathon-2011.

The praise and gratitude we have been and continue receiving is due entirely to your service. We appreciate your contributions of time, talent, and equipment, and hope that you enjoyed your time, as well. We especially appreciate your patience and ingenuity, while we worked together to resolve issues throughout the day, from managing supplies and transport to deployment of better antennae and rigs to formerly difficult to reach stations. It is fantastic that we were able to maintain steady repeater communications to virtually every aid station. Although it does appear that I need to invest in a new antenna for my mobile base station….

While we believe everything ran well, we know there is room for improvement, and so we welcome and encourage candid feedback towards making future events better and better. Also, we will appreciate your forwarding any aid station (cellular telephone) pictures to my email address, so we may have them as a planning reference for future events.

Unless you indicate otherwise, we will continue informing you of similar events, and look forward to volunteering with you in the future.

Regards,

/s/ Nick

2 Meter Critical Mass Amateur Radio Practice Update

February 19, 2011

A wet and cold day at the Lake today. 14 radio operators braved the elements to for the radio practice. Some were remote at home and others sat in their cars like I did. One checked in using W6PD from CPMC on Buchanan Street. We talked on simplex, W6PD and a Simplex Repeater. We ended about 1100 hours, but still did a lot of talking on the radio. Thanks very much to all who participated. Keep your batteries charged.

W6PW D-star System

With the help of lot of people and overcoming several challenges our D-star system is on the air. The switch was thrown on Sunday afternoon January 10, 2010. Gateway connection to the world wide D-star network is just around the corner and 23cm operation is in the near future after we acquire duplexers for the band. Your generous contributions have been put to work and have paid off.

Campout Weekend Change

It has been tradition the joint SFARC/MDARC campout takes place on the first weekend in June every year. However, another group beat us in reserving Rocky Ridge for that time for the second time in the entire history of the club reserving that camp site. For 2011, this event will take place on the second weekend. This might be a better time for those who have participated and those who would like to come for the first time.
